No More Deaths Activist on Trial in Arizona

In Arizona, a human rights activist from the group No More Deaths went on trial Monday for leaving plastic jugs of water in a National Wildlife Refuge near the US-Mexico border. The activist, Walt Staton, says the water jugs were left to prevent migrants from dying of dehydration. The US government has accused Staton of “knowingly littering” in the Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge. The group No More Deaths has worked for years to provide humanitarian aid to migrants. Over the past decade, nearly 2,000 men, women and children have died while trying to cross the border into Arizona.

"knowingly littering?" what a wonderful use of the courts, as the corporations pollute and the politicians wage wars. oh sure, our government really cares about wildlife refuges. this explains why our air, water, and food are so strongly regulated by well funded and radical environmental agencies. yeah, and the tooth fairy is still out and about, as is tony rome. funny, but when i litter, no one charges me with a crime. our system never acknowledges its political nature. it always claims to be prosecuting apolitical offenses, such as littering, when it is really selectively attacking those whose politics challenge the system.

the fact is, militiamen and federal agents have been shooting at and arresting those trying to cross the border for years. who among them has been charged with a crime? the message is that it is worse to offer a thirsty person a drink of water than to shoot them. of course, this only applies to certain people, such as those with dark skin, slim bank accounts, and foreign nationalities.

such a deal.

the obama administration just gave the green light to at least two dozen more mountain top removal projects in Appalachia. what a fuckhead! in mountaintop removal, explosives blast away a peak and expose coal seams. the process scars the landscape and dumps tons of waste, some of it toxic, into streams and valleys. let's hope that polluted water will end up coming out of the tap at 1600 Pennsylvania avenue.

President Obama has signed legislation establishing a commission to mark the centennial of the birth of the late President Ronald Reagan. Change we can believe in.
