punishment from god?

often times, when a natural disaster strikes, some religious nut will blame the victims because they were supposedly not following the lord, or they will use the tragedy as an excuse to pontificate on the need to "get right with god." usually, this disaster will have taken place in a non-white or non-christian place. however, yesterday, disaster struck the heart of the catholic empire. italy suffered an earthquake that has killed at least 200 people, and done untold damage. funny, but as of yet, i have not heard one person blame the carnage on the victims lack of faith, or heard them describe the destruction as a result of an angry god. it seems such explanations only apply to certain people and places.
