jive turkey

i just learned that a turkish reporter wore blackface when he spoke of obama's visit to the country. incredible. the extent to which white supremacy pervades the earth is astonishing, as is our relative silence on the issue. whether it is the spanish basketball team pulling their eyes back to mock the chinese, a turkish reporter painting his face black, or a spanish novela portraying indigenous and black characters as caricatures, it is clear that the world culture of white supremacy remains a potent force that is not limited to the u.s. or europe. while the ideas may have begun in these places, they have spread far and wide and now exist everywhere. as long as the potency of worldwide white supremacy exists, a better world will not come into being, because white supremacy, besides being in and of itself a great evil, is also closely connected to issues of class, culture, health care, policing, and the environment.

now, i have knocked obama continuously, but let's stop and contemplate the fact that despite doing nearly everything the power elite wants, he is still met with significant racial discrimination. american papers portray him as a murdered monkey, and foreign reporters darken themselves to degrade him. he does what they want, but a big part of them will never be completely satisfied, because they are too dirtied by white supremacy to fully acknowledge that he is on their team. obama's approach, like poitier and cosby and woods before him, is to stride and glide above it all. not once has he spoken to the racism displayed against him, or to the far greater racism displayed against many who share a portion of his ancestry. katrina, jena 6, sean bell, oscar grant, mumia? search far and wide, and you will find not a word from the big o. nor is there a record of him making a sound about the post cartoon or the turkish reporter.

if obama can't get angry over such crap, then why am i so mad? well, i know why i'm mad. there are hundreds of years of reasons to be mad over such nonsense.

the fact that obama remains calm and silent says much about him. it tells us that he is just another apologistic representative of the system, the only difference being that his slightly darker hue leaves him open to the systemic ignorance of a culture he so wants to excel in.
